The stellar cartography department was an area aboard a Federation starship which was dedicated to the science and the practice of charting space.

As late as the 23rd century, Starfleet ships still used actual telescopes to chart space. (TOS short story: "Make-Believe")

In the 24th century, most Federation starship classes came equipped with stellar cartography laboratories, including Galaxy-class, Sovereign-class, Intrepid-class and Luna-class vessels. (TNG episode: "Lessons"; VOY episodes: "Time and Again" & "Year of Hell"; TTN novel: Taking Wing)
