Facility type: starbase
Affiliation: Federation Starfleet
Status: active (2370s)

Starbase 86 was a Federation Starfleet starbase in the 24th century. Located near the Alpha Kratonii system, it provided services for a string of mining colonies. (TOS novel: The Better Man)

Starbase 86 was a possible new assignment offered Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge, should he have declined to undergo ocular implant surgery in 2372. (TNG eBook: The Insolence of Office)

Starbase 86 remained active into the late 2370s, after the Dominion War. (TNG video games: Armada, Armada II)

In Armada, the starbase's space station name was randomly assigned to a playing field station by the game software.

[edit] Alternate timelines

In an alternate timeline future created by the death of Deanna Troi in 2368, Starbase 86 was far removed from any well-traveled shipping lanes in the year 2408. Because of this, it was nicknamed "Starbase Dead-End."

Admiral William T. Riker was the Starbase's commanding officer. His assistant was Lieutenant Dexter. In this reality, both the USS Hood and USS Chance visited Starbase 86 in that year. (TNG novel: Imzadi)
